ALL HAIL THE FRESH QUEEN OF BEL-AIR

Now this is a story all about how...much a style queen Hilary Banks really was.  Would you cry if I told you The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was first aired 32 years ago this year? 32 YEARS AGO. And yes I can still recite the opening credits without missing a word, how is that when I can't remember a single Yeats or Kavanagh quote? But first before we get engrossed in the new reboot, Bel-Air, which looks a lot grittier and edgier than the original 1990s version, I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how Hillary Banks was the real queen of a town called Bel-Air. Even though I did appreciate Will Smith's flamboyant, vibrant wardrobe, I was drawn more to Ashley Banks......

My Oscar Predictions 2022

My Oscar 2022 Predictions March 5, 2023 It's award season and when I know that it should be all about who wins(!) for me it's about the clothes, the fashion, the style. Who Wore What. The day after the Oscars, I greedily click and swipe through hundreds of images, looking at the dresses (no interest in the tuxedos), how they are styled, the hair, the shoes, the pose. After the last 2 years, this years Oscar is even more exciting. So I've decided to set myself a little challenge, can I predict an Oscar outfit? Can I pick a vintage dress fit for the most prestigious award ceremony of the year? Let's find out. Using the Thames & Hudson Catwalk books as...

How I am trying to lessen my waste

I will firstly say that I am by no means a perfect sustainable example but I do try to do my part. There are a few things I’ve started to do so that I can reduce my waste.   Storage   Instead of buying more storage for freezing my extra food I reuse my old butter dishes. They are usually a perfect portion for soup or casseroles. They stack really easily in the freezer or the fridge and are airtight.   I use old jars to store my dry food goods or anything that I’ve opened and needs to be airtight.     Cleaning   I try to use eco products when I can. This isn’t always possible for...

RTE GUIDE ARTICLE

We were lucky to feature in the RTE Guide Green Issue. We talked about how we got into vintage clothing and what our passions are for vintage clothes.  Second life fashion We were both children of the 80s when there was no Penneys or H&M in Ireland. The idea of mass produced cheap clothes wasn’t really an option for us. We wore hand-me-downs from sisters or cousins, our mothers made us clothes and we were happy with them. Clothes had a longer lifespan and went down through the generations. They weren’t made to be thrown out after a few wears. The idea wouldn’t even be entertained! You ripped your tights they were darned, your elbows wore away you put a...

AND I COULDN'T HELP BUT WONDER...

As the first images of the Sex and the City reboot are being released I find myself thinking about the original series (we won't talk about the movies) and how influenced I was by them. Still quoting S&TC today, although definitely not in the same circumstances, "I'm sorry, I can't, don't hate me" is a firm favourite. New York city went to the top of my must visit, sitting on the stoop of a brown stone while eating cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery, sipping cosmopolitans at a bar, trying to hail a taxi with just a hand raised in the air, all achieved while dressed in all my finery. Because yes, the biggest influence of S&TC was the fashion, the style,...
